英語文化学科3年　Ayaka H.

　私はアメリカのインディアナ州にある協定校、マリアンカレッジという大学に藤女子大学の交換留学生として、2006年の8月から10ヶ月滞在していた。ただ楽しかった、と一言では言い表す事のできないこの留学体験は、今後の自分に大きく影響を与えてくれた、忘れられない貴重な1年となった。全く異なる価値観やバックグラウンドを持った人々との多種多様な出会い、語学習得と同様に大きな目的であった「異文化」を体験する事、特に、何度も直面する事になった自国、日本についての思い。自国を客観的に見る事の難しさ、しかし日本人というアイデンティティに、誇りを持つ事の必要性を改めて実感できたのはアメリカという多文化・多民族国家で暮らしていたからだと思う。さらには、世界的に様々な課題を抱えるアメリカで飛び交う莫大な情報によって、今起きている世界のネガティブな現実などにも目を向ける機会を得ることができた。
また学習面では、表現力や具体化する力を追求されたライティングやスピーチ、カレッジリーディングなどの基礎クラスにみっちり鍛えられ、実践的な議論やリサーチが多かったジェンダーやグローバルパースペクティブ、そしてスペイン語、グラフィックデザインなどの興味深いクラスも多く、様々な分野を学習する事ができた。そこで培った知識はもちろん、様々な面で自分から行動を起こしていく事の大切さも学んだ。好奇心や探究心も広く持ち、多岐に渡って学び続けていきたいと思う。

　そして、やはり一番心に残るのは、パワフルでクレイジー、けれどいつも真正面から心を開いて向き合ってくれたアメリカ人のジェニファー、ペルーからの移民であり、大変な環境の中でもいつも笑顔を絶やさず、価値観をお互いにシェアする事ができたパオラ、の国境を越えた二人の親友を始めとする、インディアナで出会った人々の暖かさである。彼らから得たものをこれから一生持ち続けていきたい。

　最後に、日本から応援してくださった先生方や国際交流センターの方々、友達、家族にも心から感謝したいと思います。沢山のサポートを本当にありがとうございました。

Hottest Year Ever

I attended Marian College in Indiana in the U.S., which has an affiliation with Fuji Women’s University, for ten months beginning in August 2006 as an exchange student. I cannot describe the experience as just fun. Instead of saying that, I would like to declare that the experience was so priceless and unforgettable that it might even change my whole life. I met quite a lot of people who have different values, backgrounds, and lifestyles. I enjoyed a cross-cultural experience there, as well as mastering the English language, which was my original objective for studying in the U.S. In addition, I realized how difficult and important it is to see our own country objectively; at the same time, through the experience of staying in the States, a multicultural country, I strongly feel that I need to be proud of my own identity and country as a Japanese. Moreover, I had an opportunity to think about global issues surrounded by a wealth of information from all over the world, which opened my eyes to the realities of the world’s current situation and its problems.

In academics, basic classes in writing, speech, and college-level reading gave me a chance to enhance my expression skills in English. Besides these experiences, I learned a lot in classes about gender and the global perspective, which focused on discussions and practical research. I also enjoyed learning Spanish and graphic design, a very creative class. I acquired a lot of knowledge from those fields of study and, at the same time, through learning in those classes I found out how important it was to take action by myself. I will continue to learn in various ways, having curiosity and an inquiring mind.
The most unforgettable memories are of my best friends, Jennifer and Paola. Jennifer is powerful and a little bit “crazy,” but she has a big heart and treated me like her real sister. With Paola, an immigrant from Peru who always had a smile, even in difficult situations, I could share values. Many other people I met in Indiana were also incredible and so special for me. They gave me a lot of valuable advice about life, and I would keep their memories forever with me.　

Lastly, I would also like to thank so much from the bottom of my heart to my professors, Ms. Shinada, friends, and family members who have supported me and encouraged me all the time.
